Every November, Tokyo’s business districts and shopping complexes switch on their winter lights, and the city turns into one of the best places in Asia for an evening walk. This guide covers where to find the best Tokyo Christmas lights in 2026-27, the dates and hours published on official event pages as of 4 Nov 2026, and how to string several stops into one night. For the customs side of the holiday, see our post on Christmas in Japan.

Quick answer: For classic gold trees by Tokyo Station, start with Marunouchi. For blue and white lights with Tokyo Tower in the background, go to the Keyakizaka illumination at Roppongi Hills, then walk to Tokyo Midtown. Yebisu Garden Place is the pick for its big crystal chandelier, and Yomiuriland is the one to choose if you want a large, ticketed show on the edge of the city. Most street illuminations are free and run from November to 25 December, and Marunouchi, Yebisu and Midtown’s garden lights continue into 2027. Go on a weeknight after dark and avoid 24 and 25 December, when the crowds are heaviest.

The best Christmas lights in Tokyo
Dates and hours below come from each organizer’s official page or press release, checked on 4 Nov 2026. Events can change hours for weather or private functions, so check the official page on the day.
Marunouchi Illumination
This is the one most visitors picture: a long avenue of trees wrapped in champagne-gold lights along Marunouchi Naka-dori, a short walk from Tokyo Station. This is its 25th edition. The 2026-27 run is 12 Nov 2026 to 14 Feb 2027, from 4pm to 11pm, extended to midnight throughout December, and it is free. Until 25 December, the nearby Gyoko-dori also has Harry Potter-themed holiday decorations as part of Marunouchi’s Bright Holiday program (marunouchi.com).

Tip: walk the avenue end to end, then look back toward the station. The lit section is about 1.2 km long, so allow time for photos.
Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka Illumination
Keyakizaka-dori is lined with trees lit in blue and white, and the view runs toward Tokyo Tower. This year’s “SNOW&BLUE” display runs from 5 Nov to 25 Dec 2026, 5pm to 10pm, and it is free. The Roppongi Hills Christmas Market, now in its 20th year, runs from 21 Nov to 25 Dec, 11am to 9pm, at O-yane Plaza. The official event page is roppongihills.com.

Tip: stand at the top of the street for the Tokyo Tower view; if you want to see the tower up close another day, our Tokyo Tower guide helps.
Tokyo Midtown Christmas
Midtown, also in Roppongi, holds MIDTOWN CHRISTMAS 2026 from 26 Nov to 25 Dec under the theme “Midwinter Night’s Dream”. The garden lights are on from 5pm to 11pm at no charge, with a bubble show every few minutes until 20 Dec. The “Path of Light” section stays lit until 23 Feb 2027, and an ice rink opens on 5 Dec. Note that Midtown is temporarily closed from 21 to 23 Nov 2026.

Tip: because it starts later than Roppongi Hills, plan Midtown for the last week of November onward.
Yebisu Garden Place
The centerpiece is “Baccarat ETERNAL LIGHTS”, a huge crystal chandelier in Center Plaza, on show from 14 Nov 2026 to 11 Jan 2027. A roughly 10 m Christmas tree stands from 14 Nov to 25 Dec, and about 100,000 champagne-gold lights cover the complex until 28 Feb 2027, from 4pm to 11pm (5pm on opening day). A small Christmas market also runs to 25 Dec. Details are on the official Yebisu Garden Place page.

Tip: the chandelier is easiest to enjoy on a weeknight, when you can stand close.
Tokyo Skytree Town
Skytree Town’s Dream Christmas illuminations run from 5 Nov to 25 Dec 2026 in several spots around the complex. The official lighting page is on Tokyo Solamachi, and our Tokyo Skytree guide covers the tower itself. Tip: pair the lights with a trip up the tower if you want a view of the city’s own lights.
Caretta Shiodome
Caretta’s illumination, in Shiodome, is a long-running free display, but 2026-27 dates and hours had not been announced as of 4 Nov 2026. Past seasons ran from November into February, so a similar window is likely, but that is an expectation, not a fact. Check the Caretta Shiodome website closer to the date.
Tokyo Christmas Market
This German-style market has moved around over the years and is no longer in Hibiya Park. For 2026 it runs at a new site in Shin-Toyosu from 20 Nov to 25 Dec (11am-9:30pm) and at Shiba Park, with Tokyo Tower views, from 4 to 25 Dec (11am-10pm). Adult entry is JPY 1,000 on weekdays, JPY 1,500 on weekends and holidays, and JPY 2,000 on 24 and 25 Dec (about USD 6 to 13 as of November 2026, at roughly 158 yen to the dollar). See tokyochristmas.net.
Yomiuriland Jewellumination
Yomiuriland, a theme park in Inagi on the western edge of Tokyo, runs a large paid illumination. The 2026-27 season, “Growing Light”, runs from 29 Oct 2026 to 4 Apr 2027 on 138 days, with lights from 4pm and closing around 8:30pm depending on the period. Adult admission is JPY 1,800 (about USD 11 as of November 2026); rides cost extra unless you buy a ride pass. Tokyo’s tourism site, GO TOKYO, is a good place to start for other events.
Tip: this is a half-day trip, not a quick stop, so keep it for a separate evening.
An easy one-evening route
A sensible Tokyo-centered night: begin at Tokyo Station and walk Marunouchi Naka-dori as the sky darkens. Then head to Hibiya and take the Hibiya Line to Roppongi, where Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown are both close to the station. Allow roughly an hour at each stop, and treat that as a rough guide rather than a schedule. An IC card such as Suica keeps the trains simple; our Suica guide explains it.
If you are already in Shibuya or want more free things to do, see our Shibuya guide and our list of free things to do in Tokyo.
When to go and how to beat the crowds
Many displays switch on in mid-November, and most street lights run to 25 December. Some, like Marunouchi and Yebisu, continue into 2027. Sunset in Tokyo in December is about 4:30pm, so you can start around 5pm. Weeknights are calmer than weekends, and Christmas Eve is a popular date night in Japan, so expect crowds on 24 and 25 December.
Christmas Day is not a public holiday in Japan; 25 December is a normal working day. Our Japan in December guide has the wider picture.
What to wear and bring for a cold night out
December in Tokyo is generally dry and cold. Typical daily highs are around 12 C (about 54 F) and lows around 4 C (about 39 F), based on Japan Meteorological Agency averages. Layers, a scarf and gloves matter after dark. Our what to wear in November guide is a useful starting point, and December is a little colder.
Visiting from Singapore, Australia, the UK or Canada
Readers from Australia will find the contrast striking, since December is summer at home. Singapore visitors will need real winter layers, not just a light jacket. Trains and many shops accept IC cards like Suica, but carry some cash as well, especially for market stalls.
